A night at the Camden Head.
In 2010, a group of comedians started a small comedy night in a room above a pub in Angel. The one night a week turned into two, into three, into seven, into several shows a night every night of the week. It was named “a comedy institution” by Time Out. Because it’s a lovely gig. For comedians who want a caring audience, and for an audience that wants good quality, genuine comedy, in a pay-what-you-can-afford environment.
The Bill Murray, as it stands today.
By 2016, we had over 1000 people through our doors each week. We were hosting acts that were just starting out and big name acts. This was all from a room above a pub, but we needed a place to call our home. Our original venue is great, and we love everything we have achieved together. But in our own venue we can offer comedians and audiences so much more. A wider range of shows. Rehearsal spaces. All sorts of courses for performers and non-performers alike.
So we went ahead and bought a pub.
But we're a pay-what-you-want venue. We paid our deposit in change.
We all did. “We” as in over a thousand people helped crowdfund it. The place was built by the community both metaphorically and figuratively.
Every little bit of the club has a plaque with the name or the engraving of choice of one of our 1000 backers, who helped us raise enough funds on kickstarter to make the dream of this venue a reality.
Or is it?
It is now a functioning pub and comedy club, with a lovely heated beer garden, friendly staff, and hilarious shows. We’d love for you to come.
